ATON 1 & 2; U.S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Barge

The 120 foot Aids To Navigation (ATON) Barge is used as a platform for tending aids to navigation (buoys) in the Great Lakes by the U.S. Coast Guard. The ATON Barge is notched in the stern to accept the bow of 140-Foot WTGB Icebreaker/Tugboat, which are used to move the barges to their tending stations.

The barges also is equipped with independent diesel driven electrical generators, bow thruster, and a 10 ton hydraulic crane. Each barge also contains berthing, galley, and messing facilities for 13 personnel, who augment the tug’s crew when conducting ATON operations. MMC built (2) to these barges for the U. S. Coast Guard, both of which are currently in service on the Great Lakes.
