Kennedy Class Staten Island Ferry

The vessels are double-ended steel ferries with a diesel electric propulsion system. Each vessel is designed to carry four thousand and four hundred (4,400) passengers and thirty (30) vehicles. There are five (5) passenger cabins on four (4) passenger decks. There are some outdoor passenger areas on all decks.

Passengers will board and disembark at two (2) levels, at alternate ends, depending upon whether servicing New York or Staten Island. Main Deck and Saloon Deck embarkations are similar to all prior ferries for this service. The vessel shall be fully compatible with the geometry and arrangement of the existing berths and transfer bridges at the Whitehall (Manhattan) and St. George (Staten Island) terminals.

Elevator access is provided to all decks between the main deck and hurricane deck passenger cabins. The hurricane deck has an enclosed passenger cabin and also has an open deck area around the cabin for passengers to enjoy an open-air ride. The central portion of the hurricane deck has skylights to illuminate the bridge deck passenger cabin below.

Underdeck spaces include a machinery space located amidships, containing the three (3) main propulsion diesel generators, the ship’s service diesel generators, auxiliary boilers, auxiliary machinery and other equipment. Propulsion motor spaces, each containing two (2) propulsion electric motors in series are located at each end.

Propulsion is normally provided by two (2) of the three (3) turbo-charged propulsion diesel generators installed, driving four (4) AC propulsion motors, two (2) at each end, driving a fixed-pitch propeller via a line of shafting. Conning is accomplished by duplicate controls in pilot houses at each end.
